Mock papers
Update: I have finished writing Mock Papers 7 and 8. All eight are now available, please click here to purchase them (available for immediate download).
In recent years the Physics Aptitude Test has changed the style of its questions. Previously there were many questions which would ask the student to calculate or show something and although many problems weren't easy, the way forward was usually fairly clear. As time went on the cohort became stronger and such questions were not challenging enough to discriminate among the candidates. This led to more frequent occurrences of difficult questions which require the candidate to make connections in an unfamiliar scenario and use a combination of their intuition and trial and improvement to make progress. These questions can appear intimidating at first but it is important that the candidate gives them their best effort; many are easier than they look.
I have written eight mock papers which give substantial extra practice on this kind of question. All eight are at least as if not more challenging than modern Physics Aptitude Tests and a very suitable resource for preparation for future PATs. I am confident that they are a resource of the highest quality. They are complete with full solutions.
One of my aims when writing problems is to try to create material which is relevant to future PAT papers. In the 2022 PAT there were 11 marks for which the material was the same as questions from my mock papers which I had written years prior to this.
They are available at a cost of £120. Please click here to purchase (available for immediate download) If you are a schoolteacher/tutor or a competitor please contact me before purchase. I can grant a license for schoolteachers to print many (but not unlimited) copies of the papers. If you are a tutor or a competitor please ask each of your students to buy their own copy. Please do not redistribute any of the content.
The following quotes are about the mock papers before their revision in 2020:
"The mock papers written by David were absolutely brilliant as they challenged me to think in the same way I had to for the PAT and they developed the necessary skills very well."
"The 4 mock papers are extraordinarily helpful for PAT. They are fantastic extra resources for PAT preparation which are definitely worth doing and having a good understanding of."
"The four mock papers were incredibly useful as the format was almost identical to that of the PAT but was more challenging and therefore made a lot of the PAT questions seem easy in comparison."
"David also has written multiple excellent mock papers with questions relevant to the current PAT syllabus. These mock papers are more challenging than any of the past papers and this idea of doing more difficult questions is a great way to prepare for the questions on the actual PAT paper because you will find these questions easier than ones you have already attempted."
